1 - How could you describe your company in a few words? (categories/specialties)  

D J Powers is a Georgia-based Freight Forwarder and Customs Broker celebrating 90 years in business this year. We are proud to serve hundreds of Georgia customers from mom-and-pop businesses to some of the largest Fortune 500 companies. Many of those customer relationships span multiple decades. We have offices throughout the Southeast, in Europe and in Asia.

2 - Which parts of your work do you prefer? 

From moving high-value sculptures and paintings ( some worth over $2 Million) from Paris to Miami; to flying tons of chemicals from Atlanta to Paris during the Pandemic to keep factories running – I love the challenge that each day brings in the world of supply chain and logistics.

3 - How your company is influencing our society? 

While shipping and transportation is not normally the sexiest part of the economy, times like this bring home the importance of keeping goods moving. By using our creativity and decades of experience and connections, the work we do keeps people fed, makes sure medicine arrives where it is needed and we work our way through complex customs formalities to connect people around the world even when borders are closed.

4 - Who are your competitors and what makes you unique in your field?

Ours is a hyper-competitive industry with hundreds of forwarders and service providers. What makes us unique is our secret weapon (which we hope you will keep a secret!) It’s called a telephone. While many companies have gone to autonomous and impersonal systems, we thrive on our personal connections with customers. Our desk-level employees average many years of experience and tenure. They stay with us because it’s a good place to work. So, we win business against the big-guys every day because of our knowledge, our deep roots and our customer service.

5 - What kind of challenges are you facing on a daily basis? 

With increasing tariffs and constant changes in international trade, we were facing many challenges even before the Pandemic. Now those challenges have been multiplied because ships are not sailing and airplanes are not flying but we still have to keep the shipments moving. Like everyone else, we’ve also faced the challenge of transitioning to home-based work where we can in an industry where that is difficult to do.

6 - What is your motto in everyday life?  
How you do anything is how you do everything!

7 - How do you see yourself in a decade?  

Because I love my work, I plan to be doing just what I’m doing now. In addition to my work as a supply chain practitioner and with the Georgia District Export Council, I hope to expand my role in trade advocacy and international relations.

8 - Do you have any additional personal information you would like to share with us?

In about one month (God willing) I will be ordained as a Deacon in the Anglican Church ( I am also involved in Prison Ministry in Georgia. Maybe when I’m ordained I can be the unofficial Chaplain to the French American Chamber!
